Sun Hat crochet pattern is a beginner - intermediate level tutorial. You can use cotton, acrylic or mixed yarn for this hat - the mesh makes the Sun Hat cool and breathable anyway. :) Use any color combination or make it in solid color - this crochet hat is suitable for everybody: babies, kids and adults. I included all the possible sizes in my crochet pattern! :)

Recommended yarn: medium weight (weight category #4). I used Red Heart Super Saver in Light Gray and Petal Pink. Recommended crochet hook: J 10 (6.00 mm) or sutable size to obtain the gauge. The gauge: 13 SC in 4'' (10 cm); 14 rows in 4'' (10 cm). The stitches and abbreviations used in this Free Crochet Beanie Pattern: CH - chain, SC - single crochet, DC - double crochet, slip stitch. |
SC 2 (the # of stitches is AFTER the stitch's abbreviation) means: make two single crochet stitches in two stitches of the previous row.
2SC (the # of stitches is BEFORE the stitch's abbreviation) means: make two single crochet stitches in one stitch (increase).

THE ROUND TOP OF THE SUN HAT.
Almost every crochet hat starts from the round top of the hat. In this case it is a striped circle. The stripes are 2 rows wide ( 2 rows pink, 2 rows gray), but if you are making the smaller size (preemie to 3 months old baby) you might want to make the stripes 1 row wide instead. When you make stripes, you need to join every row making a slip stitch at the end of the row and you need to start every new row with a CH (CH 1 for single crochets and CH 2 for double crochet stitches), especially if you need to change colors in this row.

This is the finished mesh part of the side of the sun hat. I've made it for my 3-year old girl, so i have 5 rows of mesh in total :) |
THE RIBBON.
Now we need to make a pink stripe imitating the ribbon.
For all the sizes it is the same:
Row #1: CH 1 and SC in each SC around the row, finish with a slip stitch.
Row #2: Attach the pink yarn, CH 1, SC in each SC around the row, slip stitch.
Rows ## 3-4: Repeat Row #2 with the pink yarn.
Row #5: gray yarn: Repeat Row #1.
This is the finished ribbon part:

The finishing rows - the same for every size: Gray yarn:
Row #6: CH 1, [ SC 2, 2 SC]. Repeat [ ] all around the row, slip stitch at the end.
Row #7: CH 1, [ SC 3, 2 SC]. Repeat [ ] all around the row, finish with a slip stitch. Cut off the yarn, make a knot, weave in the end.
