THE ROUND TOP OF THE NEWSBOY CAP.

Every crochet hat starts from the top (every knit hat starts from the bottom). It's a flat circle. Do not make a slip stitch at the end of each row and do not make a CH stitch at the beginning of each row, work in spirals instead - you will have no seam. Attach the stitch marker to the end of the first or the second row to indicate it and move the stitch marker up as the work progresses.

CH 3 (make a chain of 3 stitches).

Join the chain in a ring with a slip stitch.

SC 6 in the ring (make 6 single crochet stitches in a ring). Total is 6 stitches after completing of this row.

Do not make a slip stitch at the end of the row and do not make at CH stitch at the beginning of the row - work in spirals instead.

Row #2: 2 SC in each stitch. Total = 12 stitches.

Row #3: [SC, 2 SC], repeat [ ] 6 times around the row. This means: make a SC (in the first stitch of the row), then make 2SC in the next following stitch (the second stitch of the row), then make another SC in the next following stitch (the third stitch of the row), 2SC in the fourth stitch of the row and so on for 4 more times. The total = 18 stitches after the completing of this row.

Row #4: [SC 2, 2 SC] Repeat [ ] 6 times around the row. This means: make a SC in the first stitch of the row, make a SC in the second stitch of the row, make two SCs in the third stitch of the row and repeat this pattern 5 more times. The total = 24 stitches after completing of this row.

Row #5: [SC 3, 2 SC] Repeat [ ] 6 times around the row. Total = 30 stitches after completing of this row.

Row #10: [ SC 8, 2 SC] Repeat [ ] 6 times around the row. Total = 60 stitches after completing this row. Size 2-5 years: skip Rows 11 - 12 and go to Row #13

Row #11: Size Child to Teenager only: [SC 19, 2SC] Repeat [ ] 3 times around the row. Total = 63 stitches after completing this row. Skip Row # 12 and go to Row #13.

Row #12: [SC 9, 2SC] Repeat [ ] 6 times around the row. Total = 66 stitches.

THE SIDES OF THE NEWSBOY CAP.

This is where you don't increase the stitches every row. You make stitch in the stitch of the previous row for the needed number of the rows and the total number of the stitches in unchanged from the row to the row until you reach the needed height of the hat at the forehead.

Row #13: SC in each SC all around the row.

Preemie size: Make 9 or 10 more rows as Row #13, slip stitch at the end of the last row.

Newborn - 3 months size: Make 11 or 12 more rows as Row #13, slip stitch at the end of the last row.

3-9 months size: Make 13 or 14 more rows as Row #13, slip stitch at the end of the last row.

9-18 months size: Make 14 or 15 more rows as Row #13, slip stitch at the end of the last row.

2-5 years size: Make 15 or 16 more rows as Row #13, slip stitch at the end of the last row.

Child to Teenager size: Make 16-17 more rows as Row #13, slip stitch at the end of the last row.

Adult size:Make 17 or 18 more rows as Row #13, slip stitch at the end of the last row.

This is the hat with completed sides (a beanie). Now you need to make a visor to turn the beanie into a newsboy cap.

The size of the visor in stitches is roughly 1/3 from the hat circumference. For example, if you are making the newborn - 3 months size, your hat has 42 stitches in circumference. So the visor will be: 42 stitches / 3 = 14 stitches. For he adult size it will be 66/3 = 22 stitches.

CH 1 and [make 2SC in the next stitch of the edge of the hat]. Repeat [ ] for as many stitches as needed for the size you are making.

NOTE: for bigger sizes (from 2-5 years and up) make 2Dc instead of 2SC)

The visor takes roughly 1/3 of the hat circumference.

The last stitch is a slip stitch in the next stitch of the edge of the hat.

The newsboy cap is almost ready! Only button strap is missing. :)

BUTTON STRAP.

Make a Chain. The Number of stitches in that chain is the same as you use for the visor plus 3 extra stitches. (for example, for the adult size it will be CH 22+3= CH 25)

DC in the third stitch from the hook.

Make a DC in each stitch of the chain but not in the last stitch.

Make a slip stitch inthe last stitch if the chain.

The hat is ready to assemble.

Place the buttons on the strap and sew the buttons to the hat through the strap.
The newsboy cap is ready! :)

Happy Crocheting! :)
